  • Each share of stock you own in a company entitles you to a pre-set dividend payment. Both private and public companies pay dividends, but not all companies choose to pay them, and no laws require companies to pay their shareholders dividends. If a company does choose to pay dividends, they may be distributed monthly, quarterly or annually.

  • How dividends are taxed will depend on whether they’re qualified dividends or ordinary dividends. The difference is qualified dividends are dividends from U.S. companies or foreign companies trading on a major U.S. stock exchange. Ordinary dividends, otherwise known as unqualified dividends, are dividends from non-U.S. companies and aren’t traded on the major U.S. exchanges. They also include dividends from REITs, employee stock benefits or tax-exempt companies as well as interest from savings accounts and checking accounts.
In general, if you own shares of a U.S. stock that pays dividends, you’re eligible for a special tax rate.
